Chronology of cameras Mamiya
The Mamiyaflex C2 is an evolution of the Mamiyaflex C, it appears in 1958 and will be followed 4 years later by the Mamiya C3.
The first observation when taking in hand a Mamiyaflex C2, is the important size and weight, compared to those of its direct competitors like the Rolleiflex. This makes it an apparatus more dedicated to the work on a tripod or in studio than to the walks in the mountain. We may tell that weight is not a guarantee of quality, but in our case, we quickly realize that the construction is solid, the machine is well made, without play or hard points in moving parts.
The Seikosha 1/400 shutter is integrated in the aiming and shooting lenses bloc, the assembly is mounted on a plate and is interchangeable, the proposed focal lengths are 65, 80, 105, 135 and 180 mm. This interchangeability of the optical block / shutter, the choice in the viewfinders, the film backs options make it rather professional use or advanced amateur use device and gives it a nice advantage compared to the TLR competitors of the time.
The C2 is equipped with a double bellows on a trolley with a great deflection, which allows to focus and to control the distance with respect to the different optical blocks proposed and already identified on the trolley by the distances scale. When changing the optical / shutter block, a blind plate protects the chamber against light ingress.
Like all C-Series cameras, the C2 is a quality product, but some modern functions are missing, such as coupling the film winding with shutter cocking or automatic image counter that seem obvious today but not in 1958. All of these shortcomings have been corrected on the later models.
